87 Million Year Old Praying Mantis Found

April 26, 2008

The director of the Kuji Amber Museum has found an 87-million-year-old praying mantis at an amber mine in Northeast Japan. The mantis is one of only seven in the world from the Cretaceous Period and is the oldest ever found in Japan.

“I found it in a deposit that had lots of other insects—ancient flies, bees, and cockroaches—but this was the only praying mantis.”
